SETTING: The Chedi's The Restaurant must be one of the city's most elegant dining venues. By the banks of the Ping River, the old British consulate, a city landmark, has been converted into a variety of sophisticated dining spaces.
FOOD: Keeping in step with the architecture's colonial theme, the menu is dominated by Indian cuisine, though Lanna and Thai as well as a good range of international and Pacific-Rim dishes also feature. The starters and tapas menu leaves one bewildered for choice though beef tartar, soft-shell crab papaya salad and lobster salad are well worth sampling. The portions are not tiny, so make room for the main courses, especially king prawn tandoori and biryani rice, and sea bass masala, both dishes are delightful.
International dishes to write home about are seared grey snapper with herb olive oil, grilled green asparagus and lemongrass-saffron broth.
WINE: Quality wines at decent prices.
SERVICE: The staff is very discreet and the service not intrusive.
PRICE: A meal for two without wine costs about 3,500 baht. |
