SETTING
A simple construction with one end on a long, uncovered wooden pier open to the sea. Most of the seating is in the open air so both views and breeze are guaranteed.
FOOD
This is a well-established, family-run business that is well versed in offering really good food, to a large number of guests at any one time – especially in the evenings. Fresh seafood is the focus of the many menu offerings. As for selection, the diner may personally choose the fish, crab, lobster or other sea creatures from one of the holding tanks near the entrance. Another aid to help in the decision-making process are the photographs in the menu of most of the dishes as prepared. This place is for those who enjoy a very casual atmosphere especially if you want to pick apart a crab or lobster with your fingers. One is spoiled for choice with this menu, but spring rolls with prawn as an appetiser is a good choice. For an entree lobster with Chao Lay sauce is hard to beat as it is steam cooked to perfection, with the meat tender and moist. The sauce gives it just that little extra flavour to make it a memorable dish. Most seafood restaurants here offer fresh fruit to end the meal, and at Chao Lay a variety of seasonal fruit is available.
WINES
The wine list is not extensive. There are a few superior wines on offer, but the majority are moderately priced new world wines.
SERVICE
This is best described as very efficient, from staff who is helpful. Orders are “telephoned” to the kitchen, and everything is provided before one thinks to ask.
PRICE
The price for a pleasant meal for two people, without wine, is about 1,600 baht.
