SETTING

Situated 800 metres from Chalong roundabout heading to Rawai on the left-hand side of the road, La Cabane is made up of three linked, open- air salas or cabins with a kitchen to the side. Foliage and bamboo successfully cut off traffic noise, and a high thatched roof and abundance of fans ensure a cool, tropical atmosphere. The restaurant will be moving to a new location just a few kilometres down the road about the middle of the year. The telephone number remains the same.

FOOD

Predominantly Provencale, La Cabane serves unabashedly large portions prepared by Nice-born chef Bouddha. Salade nicoise, a riot of taste and textures from southern France, comes in a portion that could easily cater for four. Moules farcies served in their shells is generously piquant with garlic and is complemented by deliciously fresh bread. Pak krood salad (prepared by La Cabane’s Thai chef) is also a delightful entree but the big guns come out with the arrival of daube a la provencale. A hefty portion of tender beef in a red wine sauce, it is the centerpiece of the evening. While there is plenty of space at La Cabane, a feeling of Gallic intimacy prevails which is entirely consistent with the personal touch that Bouddha exudes with his healthy, colourful and robust cuisine.

WINES

The wine list is changed monthly and is made up of purely Provencale, inexpensively priced (750-950 baht) labels. Not an extensive list but it is definitely competent. Many cocktails, aperitifs and spirits available as well.

SERVICE

Friendly, relaxed and humorous service from young staff.

PRICE

Dinner for two without wine will add up to a very inexpensive 500 baht.
