SETTING
The restaurant offers a 270-degree view of the hotel pool and garden, and the bustling Huay Kaew intersection. The main focus of this restaurant is the panel of three vivid oil paintings by artist Theo Meier set in a backdrop of finely crafted dark wood.
FOOD
La Gritta offers a fine menu of richly flavoured and original dishes. The luncheon buffet of Thai and Western dishes is very popular with business people and nearby university lecturers, but it is the evening a la carte meal where chef Adrian O’Herlihy exercises his Irish flair. Starters can be as complex as rosette of oak-smoked salmon on a colcannon potato cake with basil pesto-cream cheese, aubergine caviar, teardrop tomatoes, crisp-fried lotus root chips and basil oil, or as simple as Vietnamese crab and asparagus broth; both are delightful. Supreme chicken wrapped in prosciutto di parma, enveloped with tangy gorgonzola on colcannon, sauteed young asparagus and port wine sauce is highly recommended, as is filet of beef wellington with a herbed cepe mushroom stuffing, glazed foie gras, sauteed fragrant leaf spinach, chanterelles and Barolo reduction. But try to arrive on an empty stomach, as these are rich, heavy dishes and Irish apple crumble with a fruits of the forest compote, cinnamon ice cream, Irish whisky caramel and Devon-style custard is not to be missed.
WINES
The wine list is well balanced, if not spectacular with reasonable prices starting at just over 1,000 baht and not exceeding 2,500 baht.
SERVICE
The staff at La Gritta is very professional and courteous, a fine reflection on their training.
