Le Moulin De Sommai

French
93/3A Soi Langsuan, Ploenchit Road, Bangkok 10330

SETTING

A modest but charming French restaurant dwarfed by towering apartment blocks on Soi Langsuan. In the little garden at the entrance stands a moulin, or windmill in French. Renovated and re-opened in February with a refreshing new look. Soft lighting and cream-coloured walls give it a warm touch. There is seating for about 50 diners.

FOOD

The menu, in both French and English, offers a fine selection of traditional French dishes, with about 30 percent of ingredients imported. Escargots are a must-try, served in their shells, six snails baked in garlic and butter Burgundy style and eaten with bread; it makes a delightful starter. Another French delicacy is frog’s legs sauteed with garlic and parsley in a lemon and butter sauce; a tasty treat indeed. There is also a choice of soups: French onion, pumpkin cream and Mediterranean fish soup. For mains, rack of lamb with black olives and juice of thyme and coriander reduction is a wonderful blend of flavours. Also featured are meat and fish dishes from the grill with a varied choice of sauces and two side dishes. Steak lovers should try beef sirloin; tender and juicy it is served with bearnaise sauce, baked spinach and a choice of potato gratin, mashed or sauteed potato. For those with a preference for seafood, snow fish steamed with fresh herbs is recommended. The dessert menu boasts tempting traditional home-made offerings such as creme brulee, crepes suzette, profiteroles, ice cream and sherbert but you can just settle for a plate of fresh fruits. Creme brulee is melt-in-the-mouth good.
