Amex Welcome

Lord Jim’s

International
The Oriental Hotel, 48 Oriental Avenue, Bangkok 10500

SETTING

The dining room is approached via a long narrow entryway with a full-length aquarium featuring brightly coloured corals and exotic tropical fish. The decor, while stylish and modern, makes it clear that this is the place to come for seafood. If possible get a river view table to add to the aquatic feel.

FOOD

Enrico Froehnel, the young German chef who has been on board since late 2004, has done wonders to create some of the best seafood dishes anywhere in Thailand. A great way to start is to share iced seafood tower, which is an ample selection of the best catch of the day with a variety of spices and dips. Whole Mediterranean sea bass baked in salt crust is also to be shared, and golden pan-fried barramundi fillet with five spices has a crispy skin that gives a delightful contrast to the soft meat of the fish. Desserts are sumptuous with perhaps the pick being sweet chocolate Coquille St Jacques. Lovers of sushi and sashimi will find plenty to choose from but it seems a pity to dine here and not try the wonderful creations of the chef and his team.

WINES

The list includes wines from many of the major producers in the world plus a number of hidden gems selected by the hotel’s sommelier.

SERVICE

The very best is expected of any restaurant at The Oriental and staff at Lord Jim’s does not disappoint. There is a slight informality to the service, from a cheery welcome at the front desk to the friendly farewell, that perfectly complements both the surroundings and the food.

PRICE

A meal without wine comes to 5,000 baht.
