Pale yellow walls and ceiling, offset by dark wood trim and dark maroon table cloths, create a practical, functional venue which is brightly lit and pleasant. Lunchtime popularity on week days makes an especially lively, jovial atmosphere.

FOOD

Chinese dishes with some startling good twists will satiate and impress diners jaded with typical Cantonese elsewhere. Pan-fried turnip patties is a mellow starter in the form of three soft, warm, moist, cake-like rectangles similar to a grated potato latke. Steamed bean curd skin with shrimp in brown sauce is surprising and worth ordering just to sample its intriguing and indescribably savoury flavours. Baked chicken with sesame oil is very delicious, bountiful and refreshing with its cold, boneless, oil-wet meat. Truly magnificent is piquant baked salmon with black bean sauce, which comes heaped with diced, tasty items but ask the chef to cook it well if you do not want a semi-raw interior. Green vegetable with garlic is a good, big, healthy pile of spinach leaves and soft stalks. Surrealists on a dare might go for duck tongues in soysauce which arrives in a pile of tiny, bent, tan tongues. When you chopstick a tongue into your mouth, you will discover a tiny internal cartilage which may scare some from finishing the plate.

WINES

This is not the place for an extensive cellar, but a small cluster of reds and whites offers some decent choices, including a bottle of fine red Chateau Fleur Musset 1998.
